Ukraine drone attack on Russian oil tanker

A Ukrainian maritime drone loaded with ammunition targeted a Russian fuel tanker overnight near the bridge linking Russia with Crimea.

Both sides said it was the second such attack in the last 24 hours.

No casualties were reported in the attack, but the Crimean Bridge and ferry transport were suspended for several hours, according to officials deployed by Russia in Crimea, which Russia seized from Ukraine in 2014.

Ukrainian intelligence sources said the drone, carrying 450 kilograms of explosives, targeted the SIG ship while it was transporting fuel for the Russian military from Ukrainian waters.

Sources from the joint operation of the Ukrainian Navy and the Security Service said that the targeted tanker was full of fuel, so the flames were seen from quite a distance.

Ukraine says destroying Russian military infrastructure inside Russia or in Russian-controlled territory in Ukraine is critical to retaliation following a February 2022 attack.

Just a day before this attack, a warship was damaged in a drone attack on a Russian naval base, after which the Ukrainian government agency informed that 6 Russian ports are in the war zone.

Naval attacks on both sides have increased since Moscow pulled out of an agreement last month that allowed grain exports to Ukraine through the shipping hub during the conflict between the two countries.

The pipeline ends at the Black Sea port of Novorossiysk, which carries most of Kazakh oil exports via Russia.

Russian officials said about Crimea on Sunday that 25 Ukrainian drones have been destroyed in Crimea.
