Young people are accused of being lazy and lazy – but the reality is different

Again this year, frustrated restaurant owners are appearing in the media and talking about their difficulties in finding the necessary workforce. It’s a challenge that has been going on for years.

Nordjyske was recently able to tell about the popular restaurant Mimis Bistro on Auktionskajen in Strandby, which is closing.

– It is simply too difficult to get stable staff, says businessman Søren Madsen, who is behind the bistro.

However, internal turmoil has also previously characterized the eatery, which has its last opening day on 31 August.

Jonas Hütscher, restaurateur and co-owner of the Aalborg cafe chain Penny Lane, tells TV2 Nord that they have to keep one of their four cafes closed over the summer due to recruitment problems.

When asked about raising the salary to meet the challenge, the owner replies:

– Yes, I could do that. I am sure that if I gave a million to all my employees, I could probably recruit. But then Penny Lane would close tomorrow, says Jonas Hütscher to TV2 Nord.

However, hardly anyone expects a million kroner in salary.

Nor is it the attitude of 20-year-old Lærke Hansen. She works in a café and has already experienced the industry’s challenges.

– If there were just generally better conditions and a better tone, then the conversation would be different, says Lærke Hansen in an interview with Nordjyske.

Lærke Hansen talks about insufficient training and a lot of pressure – due to lack of breaks and condescending comments.

Unfortunately, her story is not a unique example, although of course it cannot be taken as an expression of a general picture of the restaurant industry either.

On Nordjyske’s Facebook page, a comment about the problem reads: “Before the age of curling, we took any job or leisure job.”

The young generation is often accused of being complacent and lazy, and of not wanting to work, as previous generations have done. But it’s actually a good sign. The young people are willing to work hard, but they demand respect and proper conditions.

It is therefore positive that the young generation is speaking out and making demands on their working conditions. What you find in a hallway is not necessarily the right thing. And only by speaking out does one create an incentive for change.

It is time for the restaurant owners to take responsibility and do something about the conditions that scare the young away. Because if not, year after year we will hear the same stories about lack of labor and closed restaurants.
