Famine and floods add to the suffering of displaced people in Sudan’s North Darfur State

“The warning signs have been there for months, and we now have tragic confirmation that famine has set in in Sudan’s North Darfur region,” Balde said in a statement. “Displaced women, children and men are dying from hunger, malnutrition and disease, a clear demonstration of the vulnerability of people forced to flee, many of whom have fled multiple times.”

He added, “The worst humanitarian crisis in the world, in Sudan, is worsening and deepening every day, threatening to engulf the entire region.”

“The arrival of millions of refugees and internally displaced people is pushing host communities into a critical situation, and with the increasing violence in Sudan, people crossing the border in search of safety will find themselves in increasingly dangerous conditions, and urgent action is needed to prevent further death and suffering,” Balde explained.

Satellite images released on Friday showed that the Zamzam camp for displaced people in Sudan’s conflict-torn Darfur region is experiencing a “significant” new influx of displaced people and is suffering from famine, while the risk of water and sanitation facilities being contaminated by flooding in the area has increased dramatically.

Floodwaters have inundated latrines and nine of 13 water distribution points in the Zamzam camp for displaced people in North Darfur, raising the risk of cholera and other diseases in an area already facing severe levels of malnutrition, the Yale Humanitarian Research Laboratory found.

Fighting between the Sudanese army and the Rapid Support Forces has been ongoing since mid-April 2023, leaving tens of thousands dead and more than 10 million people displaced, including two million people who fled across the border, according to the United Nations.
