Rahul Gandhi’s parliamentary membership restored on the order of the Supreme Court of India

Opposition leader Rahul Gandhi was reinstated after India’s Supreme Court suspended the disqualification orders last week.

It should be noted that Rahul Gandhi was disqualified for making defamatory statements against Prime Minister Narendra Modi.

According to the foreign news agency ‘AFP’, Lok Sabha General Secretary Utpal Kumar Singh said in his statement that Rahul Gandhi’s disqualification has been removed as per the court decisions.

The 53-year-old Congress leader was sentenced to two years in prison in March in a case that critics described as an attempt to suppress the opposition in the so-called world’s largest democracy.

This issue started in the 2019 election campaign when Rahul Gandhi said that ‘How come all thieves are named Modi? Nirav Modi, Lalit Modi, Narendra Modi’.

His statement was presented as an insult against the Indian Prime Minister and others of this surname, who are associated with the lower sections of the caste hierarchy in India.

According to Indian law, a lawmaker who is sentenced to 2 years or more is disqualified from sitting in the Indian Parliament, under the same law Rahul Gandhi faced disqualification.

Although Rahul Gandhi was expelled from the House, he stayed out of jail by appealing against the decision in the Supreme Court in New Delhi.

Congress chief Mallikarjan Kharge called it a ‘welcome step’ and called on the government to ‘focus on governance instead of defaming democracy by targeting opposition leaders’.

Congress Party MP Shashi Tharoor welcomed the announcement of Gandhi’s rehabilitation and called it a big relief.

“He can now resume his duties in the Lok Sabha to serve the Indian people and his constituencies, this is a victory for justice and our democracy,” he said.

It should be noted that the Supreme Court of India on Friday suspended Gandhi’s conviction for defamation and said that the initial trial was to give him the maximum prison sentence (two years) for the statements he made during an election rally four years ago. Failed to justify.
