At least 35 people have been killed and 18 injured in the past three days due to heavy rains in several provinces of Pakistan, officials said Thursday.
Most of the deaths are concentrated in the northwestern province of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, according to a statement from the regional disaster management authority, where “rain-induced accidents have left 24 dead and 17 injured in the past three days.”
The dead included twelve minors and six women, the agency added.
The eastern state of Punjab, whose capital recorded the highest volume of rainfall on Thursday with 337 millimetres, reported three deaths and one injury in the past 12 hours.
Roads, homes and even hospitals were flooded in the city, according to images from Pakistani television Geo TV. Punjab’s disaster management authority warned of the risk of flooding in the Indus and Chenab rivers between today and next Sunday.
In the southern province of Sindh, the disaster management agency said at least eight people, including five children, were killed by lightning in Tharparkar district.
Pakistan’s National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA) warned on Monday that strong monsoon currents from the Bay of Bengal could lead to heavy rains and flash floods in several provinces of Pakistan, including Khyber Pakhtunkhwa and Punjab.
Despite its very low share of carbon emissions, Pakistan is one of the most vulnerable countries to the effects of climate change in the world.
In 2022, unprecedented rainfall triggered flooding across the country, killing more than 1,700 people and causing estimated losses of more than $30 billion.
