Employees of the municipality of Offenburg discovered a freshly dug hole in the grave of its former finance minister Germany and Christian Democrat former president of the Bundestag, according to what the German newspaper Bild reports this morning.
The local police report that unknown persons dug to a depth of 1.20 meters in the grave of Wolfgang Schäuble, without however reaching the coffin. Cemetery employees spotted the vandalism earlier today and notified the police. At the behest of the public prosecutor’s office, a Crime Squad investigation is underway into “disturbing the peace of a deceased person” and potential eyewitnesses are being sought. The act carries a prison sentence of up to three years.
“Deeply shocked,” said Wolfgang Schäuble’s successor to the presidency of the Bundestag, Berbel Bass. “It is intolerable that there are apparently people desecrating Wolfgang Schäuble’s grave and disturbing his peace. I am very concerned when some parts of our society display such brutality,” said Mrs. Bass and expressed her deep sadness at the incident.
The general secretary of the Christian Democratic Party (CDU) Carsten Linnemann told the BILD newspaper that he was “scared” and expressed hope that the perpetrators would be caught soon.
