The 10th and 12th Vice President of the Republic of Indonesia Jusuf Kalla or JK attended the funeral of Hamas political leader Ismail Haniyeh in Doha, Qatar, Friday, August 2, 2024, local time. Haniyeh was buried at the Qatar Emir Family Cemetery in the Lusail area, a coastal area north of Doha, after Friday prayers or at around 13:30 local time.

Before being buried, the body of the late Haniyeh was prayed at the Mosque of Imam Muhammad bin Abdul Wahhab. JK was seen performing funeral prayers with thousands of people present.

JK was seen accompanied by Minister of Law and Human Rights 2004-2007 Hamid Awaluddin, former General Chairman of PP Muhammadiyah Din Syamsuddin, and Indonesian Ambassador to Qatar Ridwan Hassan. JK also witnessed the funeral of the Hamas leader whom he had met directly two weeks earlier. After the funeral procession, JK and his entourage prayed together again for the deceased.

According to JK, hundreds or even thousands of people who attended looked emotional. They were absorbed in Friday prayers and continued with funeral prayers.

Those who attended were high-ranking officials from Turkey, the PM of Iran, Malaysia, Oman, and several neighboring countries. “All were present and this signifies that we all support the Palestinian struggle,” said JK.

“This also shows the strong influence of the late Haniyeh. During the process of selecting a new leader, of course we hope that peace will be achieved,” added JK. (Z-2)
