Journalist Roland Carreño arrested for the second time

  • The journalist had been released in October 2023 after having spent almost three years in detention.

The National Union of Press Workers (SNTP) denounced on Friday, August 2, the arrest of Roland Carreño, a journalist and member of the Voluntad Popular party.

“Carreño was unjustly imprisoned between October 2020 and October 2023, accused of the alleged crime of ‘terrorism and conspiracy,'” the organization added on its C account (formerly Twitter).

Details of Carreño’s arrest and the journalist’s current whereabouts are still unknown.

Gerardo Blyde, head of the delegation of the Democratic Unitary Platform (PUD) in negotiations with the ruling party, announced on October 18, 2023 the release of Carreño after almost three years in detention.

Roland Carreño’s first arrest

He Carreño’s first arrest The incident occurred on October 26, 2020, when he was allegedly carrying weapons to “promote violent actions.” For this incident, he was charged with the crimes of financing terrorism, conspiracy against the political form, and illicit trafficking of weapons of war.

The journalist’s defense later reported that they also accused Carreño of the crime of “criminal association.”

The regime’s attorney general, Tarek William Saab, then stated that Carreño was the “main” financier of VP. He also stated that at the time of his arrest he was carrying 12 thousand dollars in cash, and that, in addition, conversations were found on his cell phone that showed the distribution of another 60 thousand dollars for acts of “conspiracy.”

Carreño was detained at the headquarters of the Bolivarian National Police (PNB) located in Maripérez, Caracas. The journalist’s release took place within the framework of The Barbados Agreements signed on October 17, 2023.

More than 700 people arrested during post-election protests

Between Monday, July 29 and Friday, August 2, the non-governmental organization (NGO) Foro Penal has recorded a total of 775 arrests, including 75 adolescents.

The NGO also indicated on its X account that it has recorded 11 murders in Venezuela during this period. It also indicated that it continues to receive complaints and update the figures.

In addition to Roland Carreño, the political leader of Voluntad Popular was also arrested Freddy Superlano Tuesday, June 30th.

According to Aurora Silva, Superlano’s wife, the leader was the victim of a forced disappearance after his arrest. Silva said on August 1 that Diosdado Cabello, a member of the National Assembly, confirmed on his television program that Superlano is in custody.

“In the morning we went to the Palace of Justice where we proceeded to introduce the action of habeas corpus to demand proof of my husband’s life,” she said in her statements to the press.

The leader’s partner said that Superlano’s assistant informed him that before the arrest, the vehicle they were traveling in was shot at and then crashed in order to proceed with the arrest of the politician.
