And on August 1 another completed section of the cycle path from Pervalka to the Dead Dunes will be open to cyclists. The section of the trail from Smiltynė to Juodkrantė was also opened for cyclists a little earlier.

“Another long-awaited happy moment: another part of the reconstructed path is opening. A significant part of the Curonian Spit trail is already in operation, and the remaining section will open to travelers in the fall. This is one of the most important projects for me personally, initiated by the Ministry of Transport and in which I have been involved since the beginning. It is not for nothing that the project of this trail hangs on the wall of my office, reminding me every day how strongly the people of Lithuania are waiting for its implementation. And we will definitely finish it, – says the Deputy Minister of Communications Agnė Vaiciukevičiūtė. “I can confidently say that the quality, comfort and, most importantly, safety of travel in the Curonian Spit will rise to new heights.”

In June, “Via Lietuva” opened a reconstructed section of the bicycle path, which allows you to reach Juodkrantė by bicycle from Smiltynė, to go not only to the town itself, but also to its beaches. Starting today, i.e. August 1, cyclists can already try the renewed section from Pervalka to the Dead Dunes. It is also possible to reach the beaches with the reconstructed sections of the path in Preila and Pervalka.

It is emphasized that finishing works are still being carried out on the section of the path from Pervalka to Mirusių kopi, which was opened and reconstructed today (marking is being targeted, part of the equipment performing construction work is carrying out other final construction works), therefore pedestrians and cyclists are asked to remain attentive, to protect themselves and other road users.

The remaining section of the bicycle path from Juodkrantė to Pervalka will be opened already at the beginning of September, and all construction works will be completed in October. During all the works, as many as 22 kilometers of the bicycle path will be reconstructed, which will connect with the 13.5 kilometer part of the path reconstructed by “Via Lietuva” last year.

After the completion of the bicycle path reconstruction project, cyclists will be able to move freely, safely and comfortably throughout the Curonian Spit. The reconstructed bicycle path from Smiltynė to Nida will be 2.5-3.5 meters wide, with an asphalt surface, framed by curbs. A 5.5-meter-wide bicycle street with a 2-meter-wide section for pedestrians will appear at Juodkrante in a 2.7-kilometer stretch, and a 37-space parking lot, rest areas with benches and bike racks will be installed.

“The Curonian Spit is a special place in our country, actively visited not only by local but also foreign tourists. We need to make sure that it properly represents our country, and that the road infrastructure for cars and bicycles is safe and convenient for both local residents and resort guests. This summer, intensive works are taking place in the Curonian Spit, we are trying to make them happen as quickly as possible, and we are happy to be able to make cyclists happy with even shorter deadlines than planned”, says Marius Švaikauskas, CEO of Via Lietuva.

Currently, repair works are also being continued on the Smiltynė–Nida road, in the 10-kilometer section from Alksnėnai to Juodkrantė, the end of which is scheduled for October.

The Smiltynė– Nida road is the only road in the Curonian Spit connecting all the settlements in the region. In summer, when the tourist season reaches its peak, more than 3 thousand people pass the road per day. cars. A little earlier, in 2014, the section of the road from Nida to Pervalka (35.9 – 45.53 kilometers) was reconstructed, and in 2016, the section from 6.97 to 8.97 kilometers was repaired.

Via Lietuva, the company responsible for the development of roads of state importance, has planned one of the largest road and infrastructure renovation works in the country in the last decade, including: “Via Baltica” from Marijampolė to the Polish border, reconstruction of the Molėtai-Utena road, the most intensive highway in Lithuania, Vilnius – Kaunas–Klaipėda 23 km long road renewal. Currently, 30 bridges and viaducts are being renovated in the country.
