Questions about the sale of used or broken cars in Cuban pesos 2024-08-03 01:04:59

Cubans and independent media are questioning on social media whether the new measures for buying and selling cars in Cuba include the possibility of purchasing used or broken cars left by state-owned tourist rental companies in Cuban pesos.

“The commercialization by replacement in CUP of the whole vehicles that are technically low in the tourist rental market and can be recovered by interested buyers,” reads the official information.

The other option would be to buy them used, although in “good technical condition”, after being exploited in state-owned car rental entities for tourism, such as Transtur, Rentcar, among others. These were also acquired in national currency, although they have not detailed the prices or the places where to go to buy them.

Controversy has arisen on social media and independent media in Miami about the purchase of used or broken cars in Cuban pesos, for those users who have the possibility of buying parts to improve them and start them up.

Sale of used or broken cars in Cuban pesos

After the Cuban government announced that it will offer used and damaged vehicles for sale in national currency (Cuban pesos, CUP), the Nuevo Herald published an article analyzing this measure.

These cars, described as “exploded and broken,” will be available to “interested buyers” who have the resources to repair them.

This initiative, as we have already detailed here, is part of a set of new regulations on the sale of vehicles on the island, according to the Cuban Minister of Transport, Eduardo Rodríguez Dávila.

They noted that in 2021, three years ago, the island renewed its fleet of used or broken cars for tourist rentals, with 800 new cars, but they questioned why now the same government wants to sell the overexploited ones to individuals, to those who can improve them.

“We always get the leftovers,” “How are we going to fix those broken or overused cars if there are no spare parts in them?” or “We Cubans get the worst of it,” were some of the opinions on social media.
