King Mohammed VI’s appreciation for France’s support for Morocco’s sovereignty over its Sahara

His Majesty King Mohammed VI, may God assist Him, sent a message to the President of the French Republic, His Excellency Mr. Emmanuel Macron, following France’s announcement of its official support for the Kingdom’s sovereignty over its Sahara.

Below is the full text of His Majesty the King’s message:

Mr. President of the Republic,

I received with great interest the important message you kindly sent me on the occasion of the twenty-fifth anniversary of the Throne Day.

I extend my sincere thanks to you for your warm wishes and personal commitment to strengthening the partnership between our two countries.

I also welcome, in particular, the clear and strong position adopted by France, in your letter, on the issue of the Moroccan Sahara.

I highly appreciate the clear support your country provides for Morocco’s sovereignty over this part of its territory, and the steadfastness of French support for autonomy under Moroccan sovereignty as a solution to this regional conflict, and thus the consecration of the plan presented by Morocco, since 2007, as the sole basis for achieving this.

By recognizing Morocco’s legal basis and historical rights, France is contributing to strengthening the international dynamic already supported by many countries in order to put an end to a conflict inherited from another era.

Thanks to the very significant development witnessed by the French position, and your strong determination to act accordingly, at the domestic and international levels, our two countries will be able to work together to reach a solution that fully respects, within the framework of the United Nations resolutions, Morocco’s sovereignty over its Sahara.

The Moroccan people and its living forces are aware of the importance of this decision, which was issued by a permanent member of the Security Council, closely familiar with the past and present of North Africa, and a close witness to the development of this regional conflict. In this context, and thanks to the positive dynamics witnessed by our bilateral relations, promising prospects are opening up for our two countries in many strategic sectors, which will contribute to strengthening the exceptional partnership built, for decades, on friendship and trust.

From this standpoint, and as we indicated during our previous contacts, I will be happy to receive you in Morocco, as part of a state visit, the date of which will be determined through diplomatic channels.
