Brazilian President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva confirmed that Celso Amorim, his special adviser on international affairs, will travel to Venezuela to act as an observer in the presidential elections.
Lula stressed the importance of respecting the Barbados Accords, which guarantee the full participation of the opposition and the acceptance of the election results by all parties involved.
“Comrade Celso Amorim is leaving for Venezuela at 2 p.m.,” Lula told reporters shortly before the New PAC event at the Planalto Palace.
The trip was already seen as likely, even after the TSE (Union Accounts Tribunal) cancelled the trip of the technicians to follow the elections in Caracas next Sunday.
On July 28, 10 candidates will compete at the polls for the Presidency of the Republic, among them Nicolás Maduro and Edmundo González Urrutia.
In total, 21,392,464 Venezuelans will be called to vote on the day that will have 15,700 voting centers and 30,026 polling stations. According to the Organic Law of Electoral Processes, the polls will be open from 6:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m., local time, and will remain open as long as there are voters in line.
