Androulakis on wiretapping: “It’s a double scandal, a surveillance scandal and a cover-up scandal” 2024-08-02 23:09:00

Nikos Androulakis from the floor of the Plenary, on the occasion of the decision of the prosecution based on the conclusion, according to which absolutely no involvement with the spy software predator or any other similar state service software, was found, addressing the government that “the attempt to hide the responsibilities of Maximus and the deep state have infected the coordinated powers of the country.”

Androulaki’s intervention in Parliament regarding surveillance in detail

“Two years ago, on days like this, I was passing through the door of the Supreme Court, exposing the scandal of the illegal Predator software and the simultaneous -“coincidental” for the government and apparently for justice – the same goals of the EYP and the Predator.

What have we learned along the way of these two years?

Our country became the export center for the illegal Predator software, because quite simply it could not be exported from Israel, to illiberal regimes in Africa or countries that do not have strong institutions. This is what Greece did and unfortunately it was a shameful practice to sell these softwares to illiberal regimes knowing that they are most likely to be used against human rights, against political opponents, endangering the lives of thousands of people in third world countries. And all with the blessings of the New Democracy. In fact, the then General Secretary of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, today Mr. Mitsotakis has him as director of New Democracy to say a big “thank you”.

A machine was set up to serve financial interests. It’s not just that they listened to us, they won millions of euros. It is not only a human rights abuse scandal, it is also a huge financial scandal. A scandal of deep corruption with a turnover of millions.

According to the Authority for the Protection of Personal Data 87 people, Ministers, businessmen, public prosecutors, the leadership of the armed forces and journalists were targeted with Predator. By diabolical coincidence, 1/3 of them were also monitored by the EYP… All coincidences, according to Mr. Zisi’s conclusion.

This is where the questions start:

For political reasons the Prime Minister was forced to say in the debate before the national elections that a mistake was made and I am not a national danger, as signed by the Prosecutor of the EYP, Mrs. Vlacho.

What are the ministers of the New Democracy? Will we ever know? The heads of the Armed Forces, the businessmen, the prosecutors? Will someone finally talk about the reasons that were targeted by Predator and were monitored by EYP?

Second question: are these underground routes of parastatal mechanisms and the secret services, which are under the supervision of the Prime Minister and which, according to New Democracy and the government representative at the time, were “dirty networks”, are they a European norm? Have you seen in other countries where institutions and justice work, that there are such uncontrolled networks and that no one’s ear is sweating and today the minister of New Democracy is celebrating what we learned from the Greek justice system?

So is it normal to watch half the cabinet? Is it normal for a country located at a critical geopolitical point in Europe to monitor the armed forces? Is this all normal? So are you centrists and liberals? If possible.

Who can believe that all this is normality in a European country, with struggles for democracy? Just a few days ago was the 50th anniversary of the restoration of democracy, who can believe in this room that all this is a European normality?

In the course of these two years we witnessed an unprecedented cover-up operation, every time the independent authorities were faced with revelations. We saw the change in the composition of the ADAE with the backs of Mr. Velopoulos, a few hours before the ADAE imposed a fine on the EYP for its non-compliance to provide data for the verification of the joint monitoring center.

And the most important thing: not to open a nostril, when the EYP comes again and writes on its old shoes the decision of the supreme court of the country. The Supreme Court issues a decision that precisely states that I must be informed in writing about my follow-up file. The EYP writes on its old shoes the decision of the supreme court and you don’t mind that. And this is European normality!

What are the EYP, Mr. Mitsotakis, his ministers afraid of and do not disclose their perfectly legal – according to the Supreme Court prosecutor – decisions?

The attempt to hide the responsibilities of Maximus and the deep state has infected the coordinated powers of the country. First he infected the secret services and now the judiciary. This is the reality.

As I said from the beginning, the wiretapping case is a double scandal. Surveillance scandal and cover-up scandal. But I could not have imagined – like many of us today, we are shocked by these developments – that the cover-up would take on such hideous proportions. In the end, Mr. Floridis, every era has its own “Papagelopoulos” but the democratic faction is here to denounce them in every era because those who judge are also judged.

I heard Mr. Georgiadis a little while ago in this room demanding that we apologize to the Prime Minister’s nephew, Mr. Grigoris Dimitriadis. The one Mr. Mitsotakis sent as soon as he understood what had happened and where things were going internally and at the European level, because as he publicly stated, I was not a national danger. In a little while, Mr. Georgiadis will tell us that he has proposed to Mr. Mitsotakis to rehire Mr. Kontoleon and Mr. Dimitriadis after a lot of trouble to continue their “interesting” work.

So, Mr. Mitsotakis should apologize to them and not us. The Prime Minister today has to take his nephew and Mr. Condoleon and tell them: “sorry for sacrificing you in that hot summer of 2022.” We look forward to hearing more from your leaks. Did he get them to apologize?

Today’s decision to close the case acts as a temporary laundry of the responsibilities of the current rulers – as long as you will be rulers. Because things change in every democracy. And when things change, everything will go another way. Institutions, respect for human rights and separation of powers will function normally. This is imposed by the European acquis. This is the struggle of every democrat. Because, as I said from the beginning, it is not a personal matter. It is a struggle not to alter the citizens’ perception of how our democracy should function properly.

Today we had a revelation that proves a sham investigation, with carbon deposits without asking the protagonists of the scandal or the “why”. It is now clear why the case file was quickly removed from the two honest younger prosecutors. We, however, will continue our struggle, defending the rule of law with all our strength. The truth will win in the end as light defeats darkness, which happened in other cases a few years ago. Even if Mr. Mitsotakis and his associates think that everything is over with this story.

I want to thank the two honest prosecutors of the first court, who tried to do their job under adverse conditions.

The independent authorities, who opposed the systematic assassination of characters by the current health minister who had the audacity to want us to apologize to Mr. Dimitriadis. A systematic character assassination unleashed on both victims and judges and independent authorities. Why did you all want us to shut up? Not only will we not be silent, but we will continue our honest fight against this dark sub-state.

As Mr. Mitsotakis enters the final stretch of his political journey, today he has indelibly stamped his political legacy: the historian of the future will record him as the commander of the operation of a dark parastatal mechanism, again bringing to the fore practices far from any form of European acquis . This dark legacy will follow you to the end of your political journey, Mr. Mitsotakis.

History will judge you very harshly for what you allowed to happen in this case. And one last thing: filed cases are sometimes retrieved by officials who respect their oath.

As far as I’m concerned: This lonely – sometimes bitter – legal battle will continue to the end. Because above all, we owe a great debt to every Greek woman and every Greek man who wants to raise his children in an environment that respects human rights and the rule of law. In a normal European environment. This debt will cause us not to stop our fight, the fight that broke the law of covering up your iniquities and we will continue it until the final revelation of the truth. In the need to hide the infamy of the deep state, justice and the separation of powers are distorted. Unfortunately for you, but fortunately for the country and the institutions, we participate both in the European Court of Human Rights and in the European Union equally and my fight does not stop and will be vindicated in all these institutions.

I am sure that the moment will come when these people who insulted every Greek woman and every Greek man, will pay. And they will pay because it is a shame for a country that entered Europe more than 40 years ago, for some to expose it in an unprecedented way in the year 2024. And I am sure that all the opposition parties, the democratic parties will stand with us in this ongoing match”.
