FRP: Out with side goals, in with personal finance in school

– Norwegian youth need to learn more about economics, says FpU leader Simen Velle to NRK.

Velle believes that poor financial knowledge can be costly.

– The problem today is that few young people learn this, and those who do, learn it from their parents, he says.

Therefore, they will have a separate subject on personal finance in school. According to the youth party leader, the FpU has had this as adopted policy for a long time. Now the parent party is following suit.

– It is important that young people understand card use, interest, debt collection and loans. This is an important part of life, says Frp leader Sylvi Listhaug.

Since the number of hours will remain the same, it may go beyond the extracurricular teaching.

– It can be part of the mathematics subject, and one should also consider compulsory secondary education. Many people struggle with Norwegian today, so it is wrong to have secondary goals as a compulsory subject, she says.

Education Minister Kari Nessa Nordtun (Ap) says she agrees that it is important for young people to learn about personal finance, but she does not want it to come at the expense of secondary education or for it to be a separate subject.

– It is important that we guide today’s young people in a good way, so that they can make good, smart and safe financial decisions. And not least learn the consequences of bad choices, she says.
