In Central Europe we have traditionally had difficulty understanding road transport practices in other parts of the world. Sometimes the trumpet is taken as a friendly cue; people will wake up, interpret and improvise. There are traffic rules, but they are generally regarded as rough guidelines. China is far from the worst example in terms of gross disregard for traffic rules, but to someone from Europe (except in the south) the local traffic still seems a bit rustic.
