Temperatures are rising in Venezuela after incumbent President Nicolás Maduro declared victory in the presidential election. Several masked attackers entered the party office of Maria Corina Machado, one of the opposition leaders, around 3 a.m. on Friday.
The masked people took documents and other equipment with them, and photos published by Machado’s party on social media show that they have sprayed several walls black.
Maduro has threatened to arrest Machado, who has gone underground as she seeks to rally the people of Venezuela and the international community to contest last Sunday’s election results.
Machado told the Wall Street Journal on Thursday that she fears for her own life.
The Biden administration in the United States has come out in support of the opposition in the country, which has declared Edmundo González the election winner.
The Electoral Commission of Venezuela declared on Monday that Maduro had won the election. However, the main opposition coalition said a few hours later that it had collected results from 80 percent of the country’s 30,000 voting machines, and that these showed that González had won by a clear margin.
– Given the overwhelming evidence, it is clear to the United States and, most importantly, to the Venezuelan people that Edmundo González Urrutia won the most votes in Venezuela’s presidential election on July 28, US Secretary of State Antony Blinken said in a statement.
