Electricity: Countdown to the new colored tariffs – Which one is in our best interest to choose – 2024-08-02 14:20:59

Until December 31, consumers have the opportunity to choose one of the four colored tariffs, which will premiere with the arrival of the new year.

The new system includes 4 different categories, three with a fluctuating electricity price and one with a fixed one. For for the first time, among other things, consumers are given the option to pay for the amount of energy they consume.

The four categories of invoices

On the green invoice the price will be fluctuating and will be announced every 1st of the month. Consumers will be able to switch providers without penalty.

Respectively, on the yellow invoice the price will be fluctuating, but will be known at the end of the month. And in this category, consumers will be able to change providers without being penalized.

On the contrary, the blue invoice will have a fixed price for 12 months. However, consumers will not be able to switch providers and choose someone who may then announce more competitive prices.

The orange tariff is only for those who have installed a smart meter on their watch. The price per kilowatt hour will vary, based on intraday wholesale electricity market prices.

The prices

The prices that have been given in the green invoice, as well as those that are likely to be the rest, are:

Green invoice: 0.14 €/kWh – 0.17 €/kWh

Yellow invoice: 0.13 €/kWh – 0.15 €/kWh

Blue invoice: 0.149 €/kWh – 0.18 €/kWh

It is noted that the orange tariff concerns smart electricity meters with a variable charge of KWh per hour within 24 hours.

From the beginning of the new year, consumers will be able to compare the prices of green tariffs, which will be posted on the website of the Energy Regulatory Authority, and make their choice.

They will also have the option to change their tariff type at any time, except in the case of the blue fixed tariff which is usually locked for a year.

Which tariff is convenient for us to choose

The energy inspector, Michalis Christodoulidis, speaking to OPEN, explained that “if we have an average consumption of around 500 kilowatt hours per month, then it is in our interest to go to a green tariff even to a yellow one”.

“If we have a low consumption of less than 200 kilowatt hours or we have a house that stays closed and we visit it once in a while it would benefit us to go to the blue tariff. So that for a year we can have peace of mind.”

It should be noted that those who do not choose the tariff of their choice within the deadline will automatically go to the green tariff.
