Saarland police are investigating a possible ban on the Hitler salute paid to Austrian right-wing extremist Martin Serna. Saarbrücken police announced on Friday that it had launched an investigation into the suspected use of unconstitutional organization and terrorist group license plates. On Thursday evening, Serna presented a book he had written in the Saarland capital.

The organization “Grandma Against the Right” held a demonstration against the private event. According to police, Serna attended the counter-rally where he “provocatively” promoted his book. He was also reportedly filmed and photographed by several people. Several of the recordings, which showed Serna giving the Hitler salute, were later provided to police.

Serna is a leading figure in the same right-wing extremist movement in German-speaking countries. He also spoke at a secret meeting in Potsdam of Alternative for Germany members and right-wing extremists in November, where mass deportations of Germans with immigrant backgrounds were said to have been discussed, according to research by the Correctiv network.

As a result, the city of Potsdam issued a notice in March banning Serna from entering and staying on federal territory. In contrast, he successfully brought emergency proceedings before the Potsdam Administrative Court. Since the city of Potsdam did not lodge a complaint, the decision is legally binding.

“From the Liberal Party’s perspective, are the identitarians still, as Kickel has claimed in the past, just an NGO that has completely forgotten history and belittles it?” Green Party Secretary General Olga Vograuer asked on the radio. “Will the FPÖ continue to seek access to an organization whose most famous face pays homage to Hitler?”
