Geopolitical expert Emmanuel Dupuy confirmed that France’s decision to support Morocco’s sovereignty over its Sahara puts the relationship between the two countries back on the right track.

The head of the Institute for Foresight and Security in Europe said in a statement to the Maghreb Arab Press Agency that this is a “positive development in the long-awaited French position, which was not clear and consistent enough with Morocco’s position.”

The French expert, who studies geopolitics at the Catholic University of Lille, added: “By going further than the situation in 2007, we must commend the fact that the French position is aligned with hundreds of other countries that have recognized the Moroccan Sahara.”

Mr. Dupuy noted that French President Emmanuel Macron presented “this new doctrine” of French foreign policy on the Moroccan Sahara “officially” through a letter addressed to His Majesty King Mohammed VI.

He added that the French position would encourage other European countries to join the broad wave of international support for Morocco’s sovereignty over its Sahara.

In a letter addressed to His Majesty King Mohammed VI, French President Emmanuel Macron officially announced to His Majesty that he “considers that the present and future of Western Sahara falls within the framework of Moroccan sovereignty.”

The French President added in the same message that he guarantees to His Majesty the King “that the French decision on this file, which is a national security issue for the Kingdom, will not be affected” and that his country “intends to act in line with this position at the national and international levels.”
