Strengthening the quality control system for export sesame

Asuncion, IP.- The National Service for Quality and Health of Plants and Seeds (Senave) announced that in the next few days the new equipment for detecting pesticide residues will be fully operational. It will be applied to Paraguayan sesame for export, thus strengthening quality control systems to meet the phytosanitary requirements of international markets.

This was announced on Friday by Francisco Regis Mereles, president of the institution, during his visit to the field day on sesame production technology and launch of the IPTA 7 variety, held at the Experimental Field of the Paraguayan Institute of Agrarian Technology in Choré, department of San Pedro.

Mereles explained that the aim is to provide a definitive solution to the problem of the rejection of shipments of Paraguayan sesame, which has been repeated several times, for exceeding the maximum limits for pesticide residues established in very demanding markets such as Japan.

He recalled that due to this problem, at the end of last year and at the request of the National Government, a technical mission from the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) collaborated in carrying out a diagnosis of the current situation of the verification procedures applied to sesame for export.

In addition to improving analyses, emphasis will be placed on traceability processes in the sector, on cultural care and on good practices on the part of producers.

Mereles took the opportunity to clarify for the producers present everything related to the use of seeds for their own use. Last year, a total of 34,470 tons of sesame were exported.
