“We exchanged opinions about possible more threatening geopolitical scenarios for Lithuania, which would also affect our national security situation. (…) We see the situation equally. The question now is what actions our party and the state should take”, party chairman and Minister of Foreign Affairs Gabrielius Landsbergis told reporters after the TS-LKD presidium meeting on Friday.
According to him, the Political Committee was asked to prepare a plan of such actions by the end of the year, assessing which documents should be reviewed and which decisions should be made.
“If we assess the threat, we agree that we also see the threat, then what we, as a political community, should continue to do,” G. Landsbergis explained.
According to him, no specific proposals or directions have been submitted to the Political Committee.
Last week, G. Landsbergis received controversial reactions when he publicly stated that the support provided to Ukraine may not be enough to win against Russia and that it may rebuild its forces for a new attack on NATO countries within a few years. He said that one should not give in to apathy thinking that Lithuania will be defended by the fifth article of NATO, and called for strategic changes in its defense.
President Gitanas Nausėda offered the minister to “sit down and calm down”, the State Security Department (VSD) and the army, in turn, said that the security situation in Lithuania has not changed recently.
“When I talk about the threat assessment, I’m not talking about the fact that something has happened across the border now, which would be reflected either in the VSD statement or in the assessment of the Second Department of Operational Services today. I’m talking about geopolitical scenarios that could happen in the short term, and if they happen, they would directly affect us. That threat is prolonged in time, it happens to us in the long run,” G. Landsbergis explained on Friday.
