The increase in West Nile virus cases from one to three, with the simultaneous transfer of the virus from Western Achaia where it first appeared, in Aegialiahas alarmed the health authorities of Achaia.
By her personal order Deputy Governor of Public Health Annas Mastorakou the sprays in all involved areas will intensify even more as as she stated in “Peloponnisos” it is “absolutely necessary that there be a massive and complete eradication of the virus”. In fact, Anna Mastorakou apologized to the residents of the involved areas “for the unrest that will exist in the next 24 hours, but the spraying is now necessary, as the EODY figures are considered worrying” (p. cases have increased to 33 and deaths to 6).
As for how this transfer of the virus from Western Achaia to Aegialia took place, Anna Mastorakou gave the following explanation: “Based on the reports of experts, there are birds that carry the virus, which travels with them wherever they go. This is something that is unfortunately not controlled.”
According to information from “P”, both the case in the Municipality of Aegialia and the second case in the Municipality of West Achaia concern local residentsand not some tourist. This raises the concern of experts, as it is completely different to talk about a visiting patient and otherwise about a permanent resident. “Yes, additional measures may be needed” commented Anna Mastorakou. “We are not ruling anything out. We are on top of the problem and will intervene even more vigorously if and when required. We may also need to go door-to-door to completely sweep the virus. It is, after all, a contractual obligation of the contractor company that carries out the spraying. No need to panic. All the agencies are vigilant so that the result we want will come.”
In the meantime, yesterday a wide-ranging meeting was held at the Health Directorate on the measures to deal with the West Nile virus. All the epidemiological data concerning the circulation of the virus in Europe and Greece, as well as in the areas where the cases of infection occurred, were presented with the aim of coordination and enhancing the effectiveness of prevention and response actions. For this reason, the assistance of the Municipalities of Western Achaia and Aegialia was requested, to take all the prescribed measures in accordance with the Action Plan of the EODY with the aim of limiting mosquito breeding sites. In addition, special importance was given to the valid and timely information of the citizens about the symptoms of the infection and the personal precautions that must be taken by the citizens, through the information and awareness actions that are already implemented by the Region and will continue with the Municipalities. Finally, it was decided to intensify the actions of the mosquito control program with systematic spraying, especially in the areas of interest.
The deputy governor of Public Health emphasized: “The PDE is in constant vigilance and will continue to take all the necessary measures to protect the health of the citizens,” said Anna Mastorakou.
The meeting was attended by the deputy mayor of Social Policy of Western Achaia N. Askounis, the deputy mayor of Social Protection of Aegialia G. Angelopoulos, the head of Veterinary Medicine K. Milios, Public Health Th. Lambos, Public Health S. Symeonidou and Public Hygiene D. Danikas. From the company of the Mosquito Control Program, the director N. Perros and the member of the Action Group N. Kelemenis participated.
It is possible that in the coming days there will be a new meeting with the presence of representatives from other Municipalities of Achaia.
