Warning against skipping breakfast.. and the reason?!

Skipping the first meal of the day isn’t particularly good for your heart, says Dr. Francisco Lopez-Jimenez, a cardiologist at the Mayo Clinic. There are numerous studies showing that people who skip breakfast have an increased risk of heart disease and many other diseases.

There is some evidence that heart attacks are more likely to happen in the morning, Dr. Lopez-Jimenez said. “Part of that is because of the high adrenaline that happens in the early morning,” he said. The combination of high adrenaline levels and not eating or calorie intake puts the body into an “adrenaline rush,” when adrenaline is released suddenly, he added.

The heart muscle can be affected by a huge amount of adrenaline that is suddenly produced. The excess adrenaline narrows the small arteries that supply blood to the heart, causing a temporary decrease in blood flow to the heart.

For those who want to lose weight through fasting, breakfast is not the right meal to skip, as Dr. Lopez-Jimenez explains: “People who skip breakfast are often able to do so because they eat a fairly large dinner. So you are feeding your body calories at a time when your body is about to sleep, when you are at your lowest calorie needs,” and therefore many are at risk for high blood pressure and a high body mass index, which are major causes of heart disease.
