The one who pushed me to eternal rest was my uncle Povilas Pečeliūnas, whose story is very interesting. The elections were held on February 24, and my uncle withdrew from the election campaign on February 23. If not for his death, he would certainly be a signatory, his whole life was dedicated to that goal – to restore Lithuania’s independence.

His death had a great impact on the entire history of Lithuania. This is a man imprisoned in a camp for underground literature – he published the almanac “Alma mater” (4 volumes of 100 pages each) dedicated to the 400th anniversary of the University. It’s an underground publication with a certain symbolism – for which he came eight years. This was the person who encouraged me to continue the work I started and try to fulfill his main goal. In practice, it happened during the trial in 1980, when the uncle was convicted and sent to a camp. Even then, it was in the subconscious mind of the family – if the uncle goes to the camp, then someone has to replace him. That’s how my wife and I got involved in politics little by little. Sąjūdis started, it became easier, as soon as my uncle returned from the camp, he also got involved in Sąjūdis”.

Wife Lina Pečeliūnienė is a journalist. He raised two daughters – lawyer Mēta and journalist Liepa.
