The atmosphere at US universities, such as Columbia, remains explosive as student protests against the war in Gaza and in favor of the Palestinians continue.
Columbia University, rocked by a protest and sit-in movement by pro-Palestinian activists and students, canceled its major ceremony planned for 5/15/24 in favor of “smaller-scale” ceremonies, which ran from 5/10 to 5/16/24 in New York.
But even these ceremonies did not lack the unexpected.
Specifically, at a graduation ceremony of the University’s School of Social Work, graduates wore handcuffs, held up pro-Palestinian placards, while one graduate tore up her diploma on the podium of the swearing-in ceremony.
