India’s domestic food market is expected to grow by over 47% to touch $1,274 billion between 2022 and 2027, a senior industry official said. B Thiagarajan, chairman of the Confederation of Indian Industry (CII) Foodpro Expo 2024, said the food processing sector had grown at an average annual rate of 5.35% between 2015-16 and 2022-23.

“The sector will account for 7.66 per cent of the manufacturing GVA (gross value added) in 2022-23 at 2011-12 prices,” Thiagarajan, who is also managing director of air conditioner and commercial refrigerator maker Blue Star Ltd, said in a release on Thursday.

“In terms of employment, the industry employs nearly 2 million workers in nearly 41,500 registered units. With a market size of $866 billion by 2022, the food industry will play a vital role in economic growth.

Srivast Ram, Tamil Nadu president of the Confederation of Indian Industry, said that India is currently the largest producer of milk, pulses, bananas, mangoes, pomegranates, papayas, lemons and non-food crops such as cotton and jute.

Ram, managing director of steel wheel manufacturer Wheels India Ltd, said India produced 304.4 million tonnes of cereals, 296 million tonnes of pulses, 351.9 million tonnes of horticultural products, 230.6 million tonnes of milk and 138.4 billion eggs during 2023-24.

Thiagarajan and Ram were here to announce that the 15th edition of the biennial food exhibition Foodpro will be held at Chennai Trade Centre from August 9. The theme of this food processing, packaging and food technology exhibition is “Accelerating Growth Scale in Food Industry”. The Tamil Nadu government is hosting Foodpro 2024. The three-day exhibition will have more than 250 national and international exhibitors, industry conferences, B2B meetings, product launches and is expected to attract around 25,000 visitors and traders.

“CII Foodpro is an ideal platform for all stakeholders in the sector to showcase their products and technologies, latest trends and discuss challenges and opportunities for growth in the sector,” added Ram.
