Sirengela: There can be no à la carte Justice – 2024-08-01 12:54:58

“There cannot be a la carte Justice. It is a fixed position of the ND and I think it should also be a fixed position of all of us to respect the decisions of the Justice, whether we like them or not”, said Maria Syregela, in an interview, regarding the Supreme Court’s decision on surveillance of ERT NEWS.

The secretary of the Political Committee of the ND and MP for West Athens also stated that “we do not know the case file and we do not know it. It is not our responsibility to judge. The Constitution is what defines who should judge” and he added “by entering into a logic, if we don’t like a decision, to say that Justice is not correct, I think that we are dynamizing political life and setting a wrong example to the citizens that if we don’t like a decision of the Court, we can, in any way, change it”.

Finally, when asked about the request submitted by SYRIZA, PASOK and Pleusi Eleftherias, in which they ask that the conclusion of the surveillance be forwarded to the Parliament by the prosecutor of the Supreme Court, Ms. Syregela replied that this is not provided for in any article of regulation of the Parliament.

In particular, the ND secretary stated that “Article 43 of the Parliament’s regulation says that in the Committee on Institutions and Transparency, prosecutors are invited to speak only about matters related to the functions of justice” and added: “They will not bring us the their findings about them are controlled by us, the legislature. We do not have that authority. There is a separation of powers, we represent the legislative power, the judiciary is independent.”
