On the A58 in the direction of Breda to Roosendaal, a plane crashed on Wednesday afternoon, near the exit Sint-Willebrord. It was a two-seater motor plane. After the crash, the plane caught fire.
“At 12:40 we were alerted about a crashed plane,” says Vincent Baartmans of the Central and West Brabant Safety Region. Upon arrival, this turned out to be true. The pilot, the only occupant of the plane, died. “A very sad event.”
Emergency services arrived en masse. It is not yet clear what happened and why the plane crashed. The police are investigating and are asking people who have images from a dashcam, for example, to upload them on the police websiteTwo aviation investigators from the Dutch Safety Board are also investigating the crash.
The dismay is great
Flight school Breda Aviation, which is located at Breda International Airport, announced in a statement on its website that it involved one of its aircraft. “The sadness and disbelief are indescribable. Our thoughts go out to the wife, family and relatives. The dismay is great.” The flight school will be closed for the coming days. Out of respect for the relatives and the ongoing investigation, they are not available for comment.
Airport director Jan Voeten also responded: “It is with great sadness that we have to confirm today the death of a pilot as a result of a tragic accident near our airport. The pilot’s family has been informed and we ask that their privacy be respected during this difficult time.”
Mayor Marjolein van der Meer Mohr of the municipality of Rucphen sympathizes with the family, friends and loved ones of the pilot. “We understand that words can offer little comfort in these difficult times, but we want to express our sincere support and condolences,” she says. “We want to thank the emergency services for their professional efforts. They did their utmost to control the situation.”
Highway closed
The highway towards Roosendaal was closed for a long time for investigation and recovery work. Traffic had to divert via the A16 and the A17.
