Mexican judoka Prisca Awiti Alcaraz was unable to fulfil her dream of becoming Olympic champion in the -63kg category after losing the final to Slovenian Andreja Leski, but she was thrilled to admit that the silver medal “makes her happy because it is a very important achievement”.

“I am very satisfied, but also have mixed emotions about losing the final. The dream is always to be an Olympic champion, but a silver medal is very important. I didn’t come to Paris with a medal in mind, but to give my best. Reaching the final and winning silver is something to be happy about,” she explained.

The Mexican, born in London 28 years ago, won the semi-final against Croatian Katerina Kristo and at that time was already making history in judo in her country, as it was a record not yet achieved. After the fight, the training camp for the grand final took place.

Focus, the key to the Aztec

“It is very important to stay focused on the goal you are pursuing, not to lose concentration. I wanted to do the first set without getting distracted and then I concentrated on the final,” said the Aztec who lost by ippon (10-1) to the champion Leski.

A silver medal that will change the history of Mexican judo and Prisca’s life, since the Olympic medal is the goal of any athlete.

“My life has changed, as has that of Mexican judo. It is the achievement of the national team, of my teammates, of the coaches, of my family, who have been with me today (Tuesday). Without them, nothing would have been possible,” she concluded, amid tears of emotion.
