Open Vld: Updated Friendly Jokes

2024-08-01 04:00:00

After the elections, we follow the evolution of the political landscape in the rest of the country and of government negotiations. In our weekly column, our colleagues from Tijd review the most important events in Flanders.

However, relations have been bad, like ice blue, ever since De Croo and De Bleek expelled his party comrade from the government over a “major mistake”, namely a budget dispute. Eva de Bleek then lived the life of a “blue martyr”, which unexpectedly earned her a new seat in the Flemish parliament. Open Vld has one of only 9 remaining seats in the Flemish parliament, 1 more than the House of Representatives, which has only 8 seats.

Whoever the future president is, the mission to build a new Flemish liberal party and break with the past seems virtually impossible.

During the presidential election, Eva De Bleeker can count on the “sympathy votes” of the “deep blue” members of Open VldThey have traditionally loathed the party establishment, and after the disastrous defeat in the June 9 legislative elections, they are more eager than usual to get rid of the party establishment. Therefore, landing Vincent Verbeecke, Bart Somers’s surrogate (later landing Gwendolyn Rutten), as the establishment candidate was tantamount to the “kiss of death”. Even if it is not false, it is better not to say it publicly, so as not to ruin all chances of victory.

A basket of tough crabs

Flemish liberals have always shown Image of a basket of crabs. But now that the party has fallen into a deep coma, the spectacle has become painful. What can we say about the “scenario” with which one of the presidential candidates, Frédéric De Gucht (another son of Archbishop Karel), treats us? He offended the party leadership by appointing Goedele Liekens as a co-opted senator … while the party loudly demands the dissolution of the upper chamber.

These are indeed the sons and daughters of the blue political dynasty, and they are vying for the party leadership.

For Open Vld, however, it is obvious that The Party has a chance to survive only if it renews itself from top to bottom. This was also the goal of Eva De Blick’s campaign: she wanted to make the party a party of the base and for the liberal base. But whoever the future president will be, the mission of building a new Flemish liberal party and breaking with the past seems practically impossible.

In addition to outgoing deputies and successfully elected leadership figures such as Gwendolyn Rutten, Irina De Knop, Egbert Lachaert, Stephanie D’Hose, Steven Coenegrachts, Carla Dejonghe, Katja Gabriëls, Jasper Pillen and Marianne Verhaert, they have, in fact, the sons and daughters of political dynasties vying for the party leadership.

De Croo, Vice President?

And the “first among peers” of these liberal crown princes is none other thanAlexandre de Crowe. While we thought he was licking his wounds after taking responsibility for his election defeat, He’s back in the gameHe will most likely receive the highest number of votes again, which would automatically make him vice-president of the party. This is an interesting prospect, to say the least, if, as has already been said, the former “rejected” Eva de Bruyne becomes his superior by winning the presidency.

The upcoming presidential debate may focus on necessary updates, but Flemish liberals will continue to stew in their old pot.

The contenders also include presidential candidate Frederik De Gucht, Frank de Waal (Patrick’s son), Eva van Hengel (Guy’s daughter) and Julie Asselmann (Maggie de Block’s daughter). The eternal candidate Clair Ysebaert is running for party leader again. We also point to Veli Yüksel, who tried his luck by switching from CD&V to Open Vld after backing the wrong horse.

The party leadership provided a fragile sunshade for the few survivors of the electoral storm. The future of the little blue factory seems uncertainThe upcoming presidential debate may discuss necessary updates, but Flemish liberals will continue to stew in their old pot.
