In an initial statement, United’s website described the reason for the diversion as a “passenger emergency.” However, as the Daily Mail reports, an audio clip shared on X had the pilot telling air traffic control, “Especially with this kind of biohazard, I think we need to get this plane on the ground as soon as possible.”
“The crew is throwing up and the passengers around are asking for masks etc. I spoke to the crew and it sounds like it’s pretty bad back there,” the pilot said.

The flight was carrying 155 passengers and six crew members. Officials at Dulles International Airport said none of them required medical attention upon landing.
United further advised on its website that the flight would soon depart Dulles for Boston, but was delayed.
“The aircraft is currently undergoing deep cleaning and we are working to get passengers on their way to Boston soon,” the statement said.
