Indonesian surfer Rio Waida felt numb after his defeat in the second round of the 2024 Paris Olympics on Monday (29/7). Through his social media account on Tuesday, Rio shared his feelings after having to end his struggle and return home early from Tahiti, French Polynesia, which is the location of the Paris Olympics surfing event.

Rio was disappointed that he could not give his best when performing at the Paris Olympics, and also apologized to everyone who had supported him.

“I feel pain and also numb. Honestly, I can’t feel any emotions. I’m sorry for making many people sad. So much attention, so much energy for three years chasing the Olympic dream and ending like this is quite disappointing. Maybe I’m just disappointed that I couldn’t give my best in this competition,” Rio wrote on his social media.

However, Rio admitted that he will continue to fight. He is now looking at the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics and making the event his next target.

“I just feel like I’ve had to go through a lot of good and bad things. Learn a lot about myself from every single incident,” said the 24-year-old athlete.

As is known, Rio played in the second round which was the elimination round for
continued his struggle at the Paris Olympics after finishing third in the Heat he competed in in the first round, Sunday (28/7) WIB.

In the second round, Monday (29/7) WIB, Rio recorded a score that was no better than his competitor in Heat 3, South African surfer Jordy Smith. Rio had to bury his dream of winning a medal at the Paris Olympics.

The 2024 Paris Olympics will be Rio’s second time representing Indonesia. He was stopped in the third round or last 16 of the 2020 Tokyo Olympics after losing to Japanese surfer Kanoa Igarashi, who went on to win the silver medal. (Ant/Z-11)
