JO/Paris 2024: “We, the DRC, are victims of international injustice and this affects us even in sport” (Toussaint Lofanga)

Marcelat Sakobi lost on points by split decision to Uzbek Sitora Turdibekova in the first round of the boxing tournament. It was at the Arena Paris Nord in the 7th arrondissement of the French capital.

It is a real disappointment for the Congolese boxer as well as the entire delegation of the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) after this fight where Marcelat Sakobi should have won by a wide margin given his performance.

“We, the DRC, are victims of international injustice and it continues to haunt us even in sport. Marcelat’s opponent did nothing to her. Marcelat took the first round, in the second, they shared the same in the third. The majority of points were scored by Marcelat but we did not understand anything. It is regrettable to see all the sacrifices made go away like this. But nevertheless we are not going to be discouraged because we still have Brigitte. In the room, it was Marcelat’s name that was chanted by the public because they saw that she boxed well. My boxer fought well but she was unfairly dismissed,” Toussaint Lofanga, the national technical director of the Congolese boxing federation told ACTUALITE.CD.

The Kinshasa native took the 1st and 3rd rounds where she was technically superior to her opponent, hitting her with precision and moving after each straight she gave her opponent. But however, there is still a little hope with Brigitte Mbabi who will enter the competition on Thursday, August 1st against the Thai Janjaem Suwannapheng.
