NEW YORK (EFE).— Apple is working on creating a smart home robot that could follow users around their homes, Bloomberg reported.
The media outlet notes that the Apple company has teams investigating the possibility of making a leap towards personal robotics.
The iPhone maker is also reportedly developing an advanced tabletop home device that uses robotics to move a screen to suit the user’s needs.
Robotics work is done in Apple’s hardware engineering division and its artificial intelligence and machine learning group, led by John Giannandrea.
However, it is not yet clear whether the products, which are currently in the research phase, will eventually be launched to the public.
The technology giant cancelled its ambitious and expensive project to launch an electric car, which it had been working on for a decade, at the end of February.
This year, Apple has made it clear that it has its sights set on artificial intelligence (AI), with CEO Tim Cook confirming that Apple will launch generative AI features “later this year.”
It’s no surprise that Apple is looking to focus its energy on AI, as Bloomberg noted that the company is investing millions of dollars a day to train its own AI model, called Ajax.
The company spent $113 billion on total research and development over the past five years.
Apple’s latest launch is the Vision Pro virtual reality glasses, the first new product in a decade, which costs $3,499 (58,076 pesos).
More and more companies have their eyes set on AI-powered home robots.
At this year’s CES electronics show in Las Vegas, Samsung unveiled Ballie, a yellow, football-sized home robot that trade press said could hit the market this year.
Meanwhile, LG unveiled a smart home robot that aims to create a “home without work,” called an “AI agent,” which has two wheeled legs and can “move, learn, understand and engage in complex tasks.”
According to experts on the subject, the robot could arrive in users’ homes in 2025.
In neither case was it announced what price these domestic machines will have.
