UAW endorses Kamala Harris for president

Strictly speaking, the UAW’s choice isn’t surprising, as it already endorsed President Joe Biden back in January.

The United Auto Workers (UAW) announced in a press release on Wednesday that it supports Vice President Kamala Harris as the official Democratic candidate for the presidential election on November 5 next year.

“We are at a crossroads. We can either re-elect a billionaire whose philosophy is antithetical to everything our union fights for, or we can elect Kamala Harris to join us in the fight against corporate greed,” UAW President Shawn Fain said in the release.

He added: “Our goal this election is to defeat Donald Trump and elect Kamala Harris to build on her strong record of supporting the working class.”

Strictly speaking, the UAW’s choice is not surprising, as it endorsed President Joe Biden in January, and the latter chose to withdraw from the White House race while announcing his support for his vice presidential candidacy, indicating that the UAW also gave equal support.

Winning the workers’ vote

Joe Biden has often supported American unions during his term, even participating in pickets of the United Auto Workers, a first for a US president, while the latter has fought to secure a significant wage increase in the auto industry. In addition to the support of the UAW, Joe Biden also has the support of the metalworkers union USW, which announced on July 22 that it now supports Kamala Harris.

Republican and Democratic candidates are locked in a fierce battle to win the working vote, and states with historically large numbers of workers, particularly Pennsylvania and Michigan, are likely to be the most popular among whites in the presidential election. Voters played a decisive role in the Republican tycoon’s rise to power in 2016.

In 2020, Joe Biden performed better among these voters than Hillary Clinton did in 2016, according to the Pew Research Center: He received 33% of the vote, but that still lagged far behind his rival’s 65%.
