Norway joining the EU is the Liberal Party’s most important election campaign promise before next year’s general election. When the election is over, Venstre envisages sitting in government, writes Aftenposten.
The left-wing leader’s preferred partner – Erna Solberg (H) – thus receives a clear demand from Guri Melby: A new bourgeois government must make sure to start work on enrolling Norway.
– The time has come to have the debate, even if it is difficult. Then we must have a prime minister who dares to do it, says Guri Melby.
Melby believes it is more urgent than ever, and she points, among other things, to the possibility that Trump could again become president of the United States. He has previously threatened to withdraw the US from NATO.
The war in Ukraine, the uncertain situation in the Middle East and a changing security balance in the world are also arguments in favor of EU membership, Melby believes.
Currently, only 25 percent of the population wants Norway to join the EU, according to a survey carried out by Fafo in June.
The right has always been in favor of EU membership, but Erna Solberg has previously pointed out that there is still great opposition in Norway to joining the EU, and that a new debate must only come when the timing is right.
