Lebanese Army Commander: We are coordinating with UNIFIL and efforts to calm the situation in southern Lebanon are ongoing

On the occasion of the Lebanese Army Day, Aoun said in a message to the military, “Lebanon is facing the harshest crises and challenges, political, financial and social, in addition to the threat posed by the daily attacks by the Israeli enemy, and the victims it causes and the destruction and displacement it causes.”

He added that “the efforts to calm the situation and stop the attacks are still ongoing, leading to a permanent ceasefire, while the military units deployed in the south continue to coordinate with the United Nations Interim Force in Lebanon, within the framework of Resolution 1701, in the hope that our south will regain calm and our people will enjoy security and stability.”

This comes as a number of foreign and Arab countries called on their citizens to leave Lebanese territory immediately amid escalating tensions between Lebanese factions and the Israeli army, and Tel Aviv’s expected response to the Majdal Shams incident.

On Saturday, 12 people were killed and more than 30 others were injured, some of them seriously, when a rocket fell on the town of Majdal Shams in the occupied Syrian Golan, with Israel holding Lebanese factions responsible and threatening to respond.

In contrast, the Lebanese factions denied responsibility for the incident on Saturday.

France, Canada, Denmark, Norway, Saudi Arabia, the United States, Australia, Greece and others have asked their citizens to avoid travel to Lebanon, and those present in Lebanon to leave immediately “as long as possible.” A number of airlines have also announced the temporary suspension of their flights to Beirut.
