Agreement to strengthen literacy and education in the context of confinement is renewed

Asuncion, IP Agency.- The Minister of Justice, Rodrigo Nicora, and the Minister of Education and Science, Luis Ramírez, renewed and expanded an agreement to strengthen literacy and education in the context of confinement, with a view to social reintegration.

It was during a meeting that was also attended by the Deputy Minister of Criminal Policy, Víctor Benítez, and the Director of Welfare and Social Reintegration, Rosalía González.

The agreement will continue and strengthen the implementation of Formal Programs of Bilingual Basic Education and Secondary Education for Young Persons and Adults Deprived of Liberty, as well as Non-Formal Educational Programs and Projects for Literacy, Vocational Training, Job Training and others in penitentiary centers.

It will also establish cooperation for educational development in educational centres for juvenile offenders under the criminal law and the Early Childhood Care Programme for children under the age of 18 who live with their mothers who are deprived of their liberty.

The educational approach in penitentiary institutions will provide a boost to substantive change with respect to the usual educational practices, with the development of educational programs, provision of human resources, educational materials, new physical spaces and renovation of classrooms and equipping of rooms with furniture.

Within the framework of the agreement, it would also be possible to move forward with the manufacture of furniture for schools made by persons deprived of liberty, in the carpentry workshops of the penitentiaries, an initiative focused on rehabilitation and productive and labor reintegration policies, the Ministry of Justice reported.
