At the event, Borrell expressed to Bangladesh representative and former Foreign Minister Abdul Momen his “serious concern” about the announcement of the “shoot on sight” policy and “the unlawful killings perpetrated in recent days by the Bangladeshi authorities.”

He also expressed “deep concern about the killings of law enforcement officers, the violence, torture, mass arrests and damage to property that have occurred.”

“All such acts must be thoroughly investigated and those responsible must be brought to justice,” he said.

The Spanish politician stressed that there must be full accountability for the numerous cases of excessive and lethal use of force by law enforcement authorities against protesters and others, including journalists and young children.

It is also important that the thousands of detainees receive due process.

The EU will closely monitor the actions of the authorities in this crisis and expects that all human rights will be fully respected, taking into account the foundations of relations between the Union and the Asian country.

According to a preliminary assessment by the Bangladeshi government, 147 people have been killed in clashes during student protests last week.

Student protests turned violent on July 15, with police responding with the use of force, leading to accusations of excessive use of force by the authorities.

According to the Student Movement Against Discrimination, 266 people died during the clashes.
