The Venezuelan government has decided to break diplomatic relations with Peru, following statements by the authorities of the Andean country that cast doubt on the official results of the presidential elections, which gave victory to the current Venezuelan president, Nicolás Maduro.
The decision was made “on the basis of Article 45 of the Vienna Convention on Diplomatic Relations of 1961,” said Venezuelan Foreign Minister Yván Gil. “We are forced to make this decision after the reckless statements of the Peruvian Foreign Minister that ignore the will of the Venezuelan people and our Constitution,” he clarified.
On Monday, Venezuelan authorities ordered the withdrawal of their diplomatic personnel from Peru and six other Latin American countries, following what they described as “interventionist actions and statements” by “right-wing governments subordinate to Washington.”
Lima also instructed that Venezuelan diplomatic officials accredited in the Andean country be informed that they must leave its territory within “no more than 72 hours” due to “the serious and arbitrary decisions” taken by Caracas.
