Iranian leaders reacted angrily. Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, the spiritual and political leader of the Islamic Republic, said revenge was Iran’s duty since Haniyeh was killed on Iranian soil. Israel gave itself a reason for “severe punishment”. President Pezeshkian said Iran would ensure that “terrorist occupiers regret their cowardly actions”. Israel is also known in Iran as the occupier of the Palestinian territories. Iran will defend its territorial integrity.

Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas, who rules the West Bank, condemned Haniyeh’s killing, Palestinian news agency WAFA reported. There were calls for a general strike and mass demonstrations. Abbas’s more moderate Fatah and Gaza’s radical Islamist Hamas are competing Palestinian groups.

Egypt and Qatar, which are mediating with the United States and seeking a ceasefire in the Gaza war, strongly condemned Haniyeh’s killing. Qatar’s Foreign Ministry said this was a dangerous escalation. For months, Qatar has been trying to mediate with Egypt and the United States to broker a ceasefire between Israel and Hamas and the release of Israeli hostages amid extremist violence in Gaza. Egypt’s foreign ministry called for an end to the escalation. The security situation in the Middle East must not get out of control. Haniyeh’s killing shows Israel’s lack of political will to de-escalate the situation.

According to Secretary of State Antony Blinken, the United States had neither involvement nor knowledge of Haniyeh’s deadly attack. “We know nothing about this and have no involvement in it,” Blinken told Channel News Asia during a visit to Singapore. When asked about the possible impact, he said it was difficult to speculate, according to transcripts of the interview. A ceasefire in Gaza and the release of Israeli hostages is crucial. A ceasefire is the best way to calm tensions.

Haniyeh’s funeral is scheduled to be held in the Iranian capital on Thursday. Hamas said the body would then be transported to Doha, the capital of Qatar, for burial. Hania lives in Qatar.
