The radical Islamic Palestinian organization and the Iranian Revolutionary Guard announced this on Wednesday. Hamas spoke of a “treacherous Zionist attack on his residence in Tehran.” One of Haniyeh’s bodyguards also died. Haniyeh had taken part in the swearing-in of the new Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian on Tuesday.
The Revolutionary Guards also spoke of an attack on Haniyeh’s residence. “Early in the morning, the residence of Ismail Haniyeh in Tehran was hit, resulting in his martyrdom and that of one of his bodyguards. The case is being investigated and the results will be announced soon,” the Revolutionary Guards announced.
“Will not go unpunished”
Hamas’ threats of retaliation were not long in coming: the murder of Haniyeh was a “cowardly act that will not go unpunished,” said an official of the Palestinian organization. This represents a serious escalation of the conflict that began on October 7 with the radical Islamic terrorist organization’s attack on Israel. According to Israeli sources, 1,195 people were killed, and another 251 people were taken hostage to the Gaza Strip. Haniyeh’s murder will not achieve its goal, said Hamas.
Despite his harsh language, Haniyeh was considered by diplomats to be one of the more moderate representatives of the radical Islamic Hamas and was responsible for diplomatic activities. Among other things, he negotiated ceasefire agreements. He was based in Qatar, which guaranteed him freedom of travel. Three of his sons were killed in an Israeli air strike.
