Water slalomer Lukáš Rohan took sixth place in the canoe race at the Olympic Games in Paris and did not defend the silver medal from Tokyo. But he took care of the best Czech result so far at this year’s games.

Home team Nicolas Gestin, who won the qualification, semi-final and final in Vaires-sur-Marne, was delighted with the victory. In the final run, he beat second-placed Briton Adam Burgess by an abysmal 5.48 seconds. Slovakian Matej Beňuš won the bronze.

“I had an extremely good start, but then I didn’t correct it very well in the second gate. I didn’t quite get to gate number three. Maybe I messed up there and it was a completely stupid poke,” said Lukáš Rohan for Radiožurnál Sport, referring to unnecessary mistakes at the start of the race.
Twenty-nine-year-old Rohan clocked the tenth time in the semi-finals and thus entered the track in third place in the fight for medals. Even this time he did not avoid touching the goal, he received a two-second penalty right at the start. However, the Czech representative managed the rest of the race cleanly and at the finish line he finished in second place behind Beňuš.
Other competitors, including gold medalist Benjamin Savšek from Slovenia, also made mistakes and Rohan stayed on the imaginary podium for a long time. Only the best four from the semifinals beat him.
But only Burgess and then the sovereign Gestin got ahead of the thirty-six-year-old Beňuš. The 24-year-old Frenchman managed to improve his semi-final time by almost two seconds in the final. Without the penalty seconds, Rohan would have finished second.
