The Cuban Ministry of Domestic Trade reported in recent hours on the unloading of donated rice in the east of the island.
In a Facebook post, they stated that in the Granma warehouses, rice is being unloaded “which will be distributed at a rate of 2 pounds per consumer (donation).”
“It will be available immediately in retail units,” They added.
Like other notes from the Ministry, the message generated several negative comments, given the precarious situation with the delivery of the products of the standard family basket.
“66 years of “revolution” and a truckload of donated rice is in the news. That only happens in Cuba, not even in Haiti do they report this news,” wrote a user identified as Alejandro Navarro.
“A tremendous feat. 2 pounds of rice, maybe I can eat it for one day” and “start eating rice with chopsticks to see if it lasts” were two other reactions on the official MINCIN account.
Just two days ago, the Las Tunas Business Group announced that in Puerto Carúpano they were “working tirelessly on the unloading process of the complete rice supply for the family basket.”
As the month draws to a close, many Cubans have not received the usual food subsidies provided by the government. All this, while the authorities insist that the basket is a priority when it comes to allocating foreign currency.
Greater impact on family basket in Cuba
During the report of the Ministry of Domestic Trade (MINCIN) before the Cuban Parliament, the Minister reported on the regulated family food basket.
According to accurateFor food distribution in 2024, the participation of local production and the adaptation of cycles according to product availability are taken into account.
He acknowledged that 2023 ended with impacts on various products such as beans, sugar, oil, coffee, chicken, meat products, eggs and domestic fuels. These continued in the first quarter of 2024.
The report also admits that there is a fragmentation in deliveries to the retail network due to financial difficulties that prevent the necessary coverage and the timeliness of receiving the products.
In this regard, controlled sales of toiletries and cigarettes, selected products from chain stores and other items by decision of local authorities are maintained. When delivering donations, priority is given to pregnant women, people in vulnerable situations and children with low weight and height.
Regarding the greatest damages, the Minister said that they are focused on products such as rice, beans, sugar, coffee, cigarettes, pasta and powdered milk.
