Google introduces Axion – Yucatan Journal

NEW YORK (EFE).— Google unveiled its first custom ARM-based central processing unit (CPU), its latest effort to compete with similar chips from Amazon and Microsoft.

Google’s new ARM-based CPU, dubbed Axion, will be used to power Google’s artificial intelligence (AI) work and will be rolled out to commercial customers of Google Cloud, which offers cloud computing services, “later this year.”

According to the company in a statement, Axion chips are already powering YouTube ads, Google Earth Engine and other services.

“Axion delivers performance and energy efficiency and will be available to Google Cloud customers later this year,” the tech giant notes.

For his part, Rene Haas, CEO of ARM, describes in the statement this announcement as an “important milestone in the delivery of custom silicon optimized for Google’s infrastructure.”

“Decades of investment in the ecosystem, combined with Google’s continued innovation and open source software contributions, ensure the best experience,” he said.

According to specialist media “The Verge”, Google will now be able to reduce its dependence on Intel and Nvidia, and at the same time compete with them in the field of custom chips to boost artificial intelligence and cloud workloads.

In 2018, Amazon Web Services introduced its Graviton ARM chip, and in 2021, Alibaba and Microsoft announced Arm processors.

Additionally, a few months ago Microsoft announced its own custom silicon chips designed for its cloud infrastructure.
