  • The Venezuelan delegation of athletes competed in five disciplines

Venezuela is preparing for the Paris 2024 Olympic Games with a delegation of 33 athletes, who will compete in more than 10 categories. The Olympic Games began on July 26 with an opening ceremony and started with the sporting events on July 27.

According to the agenda for Tuesday, July 30, published by the Venezuelan Olympic Committee (COV), the delegation competed in five disciplines: swimming, boxing, judo, shooting and equestrian.

Judo

The COV announced that Anriquelis Barrios fell 1-0 in golden scoreagainst Algerian Anima Belkaldi in the round of 32 in the -63 kilogram category.

“I thank all Venezuelans for supporting me (…) All athletes need positive messages because they help us in this type of competition. I still have to improve many things, but we will move forward,” she said in statements to the committee’s social networks.

Swimming

Venezuelan swimmer Alberto Mestre finished 37th out of 79 in the 100-meter freestyle event at the Olympic competition. The athlete clocked 49.51 seconds and was 0.76 seconds away from his national record.

“Here I am, facing all of Venezuela. I hope that I can bring joy to the times we are in. With unity and lots of love for all Venezuelans,” said Mestre in an interview with the media after his participation.

Sport’s shot

Leonel Martínez finished 28th in the men’s trap shooting event at the Paris Olympics. The athlete returned to competition after 40 years since his debut in 1984.

The Venezuelan totaled 116 points and was six units away from qualifying for the final.

Equestrian

Venezuelan Olympic athlete Patricia Ferrando finished in seventh place in Group B with a score of 67.143 in the individual equestrian dressage event.

With a score of 67.143%, Ferrando had no chance of advancing beyond the qualifying stage.

Boxing

During this day, Venezuelan Omailyn Alcalá fell in her fight against Polish Julia Szeremeta by unanimous decision (4-1) in the round of 32 of women’s boxing in the featherweight category.

The 25-year-old athlete is the first Venezuelan boxer in the 57-kilogram category to qualify for the Olympic Games. She secured her ticket to Paris 2024 after winning the bronze medal at the 2023 Pan American Games in Santiago, Chile.

In mid-July, the COV reported that Venezuela had already formally registered its name in Paris 2024 with the completion of the registration meeting (DRM, delegation register meeting).

“100 people will make up the Venezuelan Delegation to Paris 2024, including athletes, officials, mission leaders, medical service, dignitaries, Olympic family, equestrian support staff, drivers and administration,” he explained.

The Olympic Games will involve 206 Olympic Committees representing at least 10,500 athletes in 32 sports. During the competition, at least 329 events will be held in 762 sessions.
