Bird Piche was left partially paralyzed when the frontman of Australian punk rock band Trophy Eyes attempted to crowd surf at their concert at Mohawk Place in Buffalo, New York on April 30.
Piche, 24, was rushed to the hospital after the shocking incident of paralysis live in New York and has yet to regain full use of her arms or legs, she and her family told NBC News.
“We were even worried she wasn’t going to make it,” said Amy Leigh Flaminio, Piche’s mother.
Speaking from hospital, the 24-year-old, who has been a fan of the band since 2016, described how she was conscious throughout the incident and clearly remembered how singer John Floreani dived from the stage into the audience, on his back.
“It’s pretty standard at these kinds of concerts,” he said. “I didn’t really know what to expect, but I certainly didn’t expect to end up in a hospital after the concert.
“When you hear about these types of injuries, they’re obviously very serious, so I didn’t expect to have any recovery.”
She added: “I have a long way to go, but I’m very optimistic right now.”
“Truly devastated”
Trophy Eyes said they are “truly devastated” after the incident and that Floreani accompanied Piche to the hospital after the live was interrupted.
“Our friend Bird is now on the mend, but she still has a long way to go,” the band wrote in a May 3 post on X.
“This situation has shaken us all to the core and we ask for your patience while we try to help Bird through this difficult time.
“Please keep Bird in your thoughts.”
The band donated $5,000 to a FundMe page set up for Piche and encouraged others to donate as well. So far, $70,000 has been raised.
