Canada-based multinational shipbuilding company Davie today announced its intention to make a significant long-term commitment to the U.S. shipbuilding industry.
Pending final site and partner selection, Davie’s decision coincides with a series of actions announced today by the U.S. government aimed at improving the efficiency, resiliency and competitiveness of the U.S. shipbuilding industry. Producing high-quality U.S. ships for domestic and international markets is also expected to reinvigorate U.S. naval power, spur economic growth, and create many skilled jobs for American workers.
Davie’s plan is also consistent with the ICE agreement, a trilateral cooperation agreement announced on July 11 between the United States, Canada and Finland. The ICE agreement will facilitate participating countries’ production of the polar icebreakers they need to strengthen economic, climate and national security, while supporting important shared interests in the contested polar region. It is worth noting that on July 22, the US Department of Defense announced the “2024 Arctic Strategy”, in which the Department of Defense will work with allies and partners to take actions to maintain a safe and stable Arctic region.
Davie has been in continuous operation since 1825 and has built over 720 specialty ships, including many icebreakers. David is currently working on the world’s largest heavy icebreaker contract for Canada, one of the founding partners of the ICE agreement. David is also the proud owner of Helsinki Shipyard in Finland, another founder of ICE Pact, known for its excellence in the polar ship supply chain. Helsinki Shipyard was founded in 1865 and builds more than 50% of the world’s icebreaker fleet today.
David has previously supported strategic projects at America’s skilled shipyards, such as the U.S. Navy’s Nimitz-class aircraft carriers and Arleigh Burke-class destroyers.
