The North West Ambulance Service writes on X/Twitter that they have treated eight people with stab wounds and that they have been transported to different hospitals.
One of these is a children’s hospital, Alder Hey Children’s Hospital.
Both BBC and The Telegraph writes that the knife attack was aimed at a dance event for children. However, this has not been confirmed by the authorities.
– Not linked to terrorism
However, the police state that the arrested person is 17 years old and that the incident is not believed to be linked to terrorism.
British Prime Minister Keir Starmer is shaken by the news.
– Terrible and deeply shocking news coming from Southport. My thoughts are with everyone affected, writes Starmer on X.
The report of the stabbing reached the police at 11.50 local time. The arrested boy was taken to the police station.
Locked doors and windows
The owner of a car repair shop near the stabbing says he believes several children were stabbed.
– This is more like a scene from the USA, it doesn’t look like sunny Southport, says Colin Parry.
A woman who lives in the neighborhood told the Liverpool Echo newspaper that the neighbors eventually asked each other to close windows and lock doors in an exchange of messages on the messaging service WhatsApp. They warned of a man running around stabbing people.
Southport is located in northern England, on the west coast.
