1st Golfo Festival 2024 – On August 10th the first action at the Municipal Art Gallery of Akrata “Zoi Psarrou”

One hundred and seventy years since the birth of Spyridonos Peresiadis (Mesorrougi Achaia 1854), one hundred and thirty one since the presentation of his play The Golfo (Akrata 1893) and thirty years since the foundation and operation of the Akrata Municipal Art Gallery “Zoi Psarrou”, the 1 Golfo Festival 2024 launches and implements its first action, collaborating with the Gallery, having jointly assigned to Akratinos father, artist and professor at the School of Fine Arts, Mario Spiliopoulos, the creation and curation of a group exhibition, dedicated to his mythical heroine our compatriot Spyridonos Peresiadis, whose drama still delights and moves Panhellenium.

In modern terms, we would say that Golfo is a strong brand name, which can be re-introduced with modesty and self-confidence due to its wide acceptance and its so far successful course in the country’s theatrical and wider artistic development since the distant 1893.

Golfo, as if ready for a long time, will speak with directness and courage about the passions of love; she will narrate the woes of life; she will listen to Phaedra and share her thoughts with her peer Juliet; she will be scandalized by the behavior of the Marquise de Merteille · he will chat with Sonya and Nina; he will be saddened to see Blanche Dubois arrive, dragging in a suitcase the remains of her life. He will see foreign bloody weddings.

It will reflect on the future and the ill-interpreted signs of the times; it will be disappointed; it will persevere and transform itself into a welcoming and open place, to be told known and unknown, old and new stories of anonymous and named protagonists, sometimes cheerful and sometimes gloomy, which people on hearing them are happy, sad, worried, react.

And Tasos, abuser and victim of love, will not stop struggling to find his balance again in this eternal struggle, where love is an invincible battle.

The 1st Golfo Festival 2024 emerges and begins its artistic and scientific activities in the wider region of Achaia, hoping to become an institution in the coming years, with an eye on the future, but having a deep appreciation for the past as a valuable legacy, which will directs his steps.

A new effort for the arts, culture, sciences, well-being and the environment, starts from the villages of the legendary Helm – named after the immortal heroine of Spyridon Peresiadis – and spreads to the coasts of the Northern Peloponnese, calling cities, towns , cities and settlements of Aegialia and Achaia in general, to take part in this celebration of life and the arts.

GOLF — A PICTURE BUCOLIC DRAMA

As part of the 1st Golfo Festival 2024 and on the occasion of the 170th anniversary of the birth of the writer Spyridonos Peresiadis (1854-1918), but also the 30th anniversary of the foundation and operation of the Akrata Municipal Art Gallery “Zoi Psarrou” (1994), is hosted at the Art Gallery from August 10 the exhibition “Golfo – A visual bucolic drama”, with 22 participants, well-known and important visual Greek artists, curated by Marios Spiliopoulos.

The Municipal Art Gallery of Akrata is the life work of Zoe Psarrou, who donated 60 works of important Greek artists from her personal collection to the Municipality of Akrata, with the aim of establishing an Art Gallery in her place of origin. Zoe Psarrou was the owner of the historical gallery “Chrysothemis” in Chalandri, (1979-2010), whose love for Art and artists made her famous in the Greek art scene.

With faith in the vision of establishing a Municipal Art Gallery, she succeeded and with her example caused other donations of valuable works that enriched and enrich the Art Gallery. In 1995 the Municipality of Akrata bought a two-storey neoclassical building in the central square of Akrata to house it and since then the Municipal Art Gallery of Akrata “Life of Psarrou”, as it was called (the official opening took place in 2005), has been operating continuously with its rich permanent collection and with the periodical exhibitions it organizes every summer.

This year’s exhibition, with the theme of Golfo, brings the popular Greek drama to the present day and to its place of origin. The twenty-two artists invited by Marios Spiliopoulos, (curator of the exhibition and participant), enthusiastically accepted to create works inspired by the history of Golfos and Tasos, directing their own visual bucolic drama, each in their own way , while paying tribute to Zoe Psarrou for her contribution to Greek art and to the 30 years since the establishment and operation of the Gallery. And of course, in an exhibition about Golfo, the jewelry, with which two artists participate, could not be missing.

And just some of the imaginative titles of the works listed indicatively, are enough to narrate the dramatic romance, while giving the mark of this exhibition, where the works weave the apron of this modern Golfos, marrying the present with the past, the humor With tradition:

“Once upon a time in Akrata”, “Couple of Heroes (Theatrical)”, “Spring flowers collected by Golfos on the seashore, who himself was ‘scared’ with her sheep”, “Golfo VS Tasos on the beach of Akrata”, “(In Akrata) …you painted a crucifixion on the fire on the hill/a love that tripped and tripped the orthro in the sky/secret kisses, nooses, and drums at the parting of the neck/Tassos and Golfo shared marriage ashes again”, “Game over baby – The curse of Golf.”

Golfo will continue to move audiences well into the 21st century as part of the global drama of love and beyond.

The present effort aspires to utilize and highlight the intangible and material cultural heritage of the region, as part of the global artistic, spiritual and social becoming.

The exhibition with twenty-two visual proposals is the first step of what we hope will be an interesting journey, starting from Akrata.
